Erzsébet Tatai: "Szemző is pretending to be innocent, making nice drawings, animation, meanwhile these fine drawings and sometimes pictorial yet stylized motifs - and not the less their titles: Organ trafficking, Darwin on holiday – reflect on bio-political questions and make a pass at scientific approach. In the animation Unpredictable variations for example, she gives scientific names to creatures (Machina Prudentia, Machina imperator) - whether they are ready or newly invented. Other times she plays with Darwin's (obviously 19th century) theory. Darwin, who is now again an actuality, constructed the evolutionary system of species according to the rules of the capitalist economy rules - as "natural selection" and "rat race". Szemző's visually and conceptually sophisticated work - virtually - disrupt this order, as if she was dumping Pandora's box only to show you: it includes only toys. Szemző's drawn arsenal of objects and organisms evokes at once "science" and "fiction", that is - today - the world of cyborgs. "
Charles Darwin: The Origin of Species : “On the term Taxonomic relationship, we mean that in between the species there is a structural and general similarity. At the first crossing, the fertility of the resulting hybrids mainly depends on their taxonomic relationship. This is clearly shown by the fact that they have never raised a hybrid species that were classified in different families by the taxonomists, whereas the species very close to each other easily matched."
In this series i pair up elements that do not necessarily belong together. The question of this series is the mutation. Is mutation an evolution? This is a research in the world of objects, specimens, and their conflux. Great machines, machine men, with lemon jellyfish, people. Darwin examines a mixture of creatures that can not be categorized in the end because they are mutants, intermediate beings. So he rather goes on vacation. In this system, i gave Latin names to objects and creatures, that i found on the Vatican's website's contemporary Latin-English dictionary.

"Rendszertani rokonság alatt a fajok felépítésében és alkatában meglévő általános hasonlóságot értjük. Már most az első alkalommal való kereszteződések és az ezekből keletkező hibridek termékenysége főleg a rendszertani rokonságtól függ. Világosan mutatja ezt az a tény, hogy még sohasem neveltek hibrideket olyan fajokból, amelyeket a taxonómusok különböző családokhoz soroltak, míg ezzel szemben az egymáshoz nagyon közeli fajok rendszerint könnyen párosíthatók." A mutáció fejlődés? Kutatás a világ tárgyainak, egyedeinek, keveredéséről. Szupergépek, gépemberek, citromos medúzák, emberek. Darwin olyan lények keveredését tanulmányozza, melyeket nem kategorizál végül, hiszen mutánsok, köztes lények. Így hát inkább elmegy nyaralni.
"Szemző Zsófia vizuálisan ellenpontozza a két „rettenetes gyerek“ munkáit: ártatlannak tetteti magát, szépen rajzolgat, animál, miközben finom rajzolatú, és olykor festőiségű, mégis stilizált motívumaival – és nem kevésbé címeivel: Szervkereskedelem, Darwin üdülése – biopolitikai kérdésekre reflektál, és a tudományosságot kezdi ki. Előre láthatatlan változatosság című animációjában pl. tudományos névvel látja el teremtményeit (Machina prudentia, Machina imperator) – legyenek azok készek vagy újonnan kitaláltak. Másszor Darwin (nyilvánvalóan 19. századi) konstrukciójával játszik. Darwin, aki ma nagyon is aktuális, a fajok fejlődéstani rendszerét a kapitalista gazdaság játékszabályai szerint – mint a „természetes kiválasztódás“, „létért való küzdelem“ – alkotta meg. Szemző Zsófia vizuálisan és konceptuálisan szofisztikált munkái – virtuálisan – felborítják ezt a rendet, mintha az alkotó Pandora szelencéjét borítaná ki, ám a dobozkáról közben kiderül: játékszereket tartalmaz. Szemző Zsófia rajzolt tárgyainak és élőlényeinek arzenálja egyszerre idézi meg a „science“ és a „fiction“, azaz – manapság – a kiborgok világát." Tatai Erzsébet
